Are you planning a trip to the Big Apple and looking for the best tips for traveling to New York? After visiting it several times we will tell you a lot of tips and recommendations to help you prepare the trip in the best possible way 🙂 And it is that New York is one of our favorite cities. Since we visited it for the first time in 2017 we have in mind to move here, even if it is a little season in a Brooklyn loft. Or in a little house in Astoria. Not a bad plan, right?

For now we are satisfied with the memories and photos of that week we spent in the Big Apple and that wonderful one, month we enjoyed between Manhattan and Brooklyn. If New York is one of the destinations on your list of upcoming trips, congratulations! And not only because you will enjoy an incredible city, but because you just found the best website to prepare your trip! Here are 25 tips for traveling to New York (and not screw it up).

1. The first thing we advise you is take travel planning seriously. There are countries that do not need a special organization, the United States is not among them and you will have to work it out. To start you can read this post where we tell you the preparations for a trip to New York (ESTA, medical insurance, flights ...).

2. Do you want a secret to get very cheap flights? It is true that there are offers to fly to New York, but they are not always found. As a second option try flights to Boston, we assure you that the prices will be bargain! Take the opportunity to get to know this beautiful city of Massachusets and then head to New York, there are cheap buses (from € 1!) With Megabus it will take only 3 hours.

3. And what about the accommodations? Surely you have been told that the hotels in New York are very expensive. Yes but no. In this post we give you a few guidelines to find cheap accommodation in New York (from € 40 in shabby options, and € 60-70 cool things).

4. Another fundamental expense in a trip is food. Well eating in New York cheap is not only possible, but it's super simple. Here we leave you a few ideas to fill your stomach for less than $ 5 and here many others where you can eat well and cheaply in New York.

5. The New York subway It is one of the great terrors of travelers. He is reputed to be huge and very messy. Great if it is, but it doesn't have to be so complicated to understand if you read this New York subway guide from Anuevayork's blog. We would add only one thing: get yourself a metrocard. The weekly voucher costs $ 32 and allows you to use unlimited means of transportation for 7 days.

So the Big Apple is you, huh?

6. Is it worth it?tourist passes or it is better to buy tickets separately? Easy answer: it depends on what you want to do. Our experience is that if you want to enter all the main attractions of the city, buy a tourist pass. After investigating the different options, we believe that the New York Pass is the best, since it includes the entry of more than 100 attractions, among which are:

  • Empire State Building
  • Top of the rock
  • Ferry to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island (Immigration Museum)
  • Hudson River Cruise
  • 9/11 Museum
  • Guggenheim museum
  • MoMa (Museum of Modern Art)
  • MET (Metropolitan Museum of Art)
  • Tourist bus
  • Cycling route through Central Park

The pass price It depends on the number of days hired. If you manage to do it all in a couple of days, it will cost you € 159.

7. Other tourist card quite interesting is the New York Explorer Pass whose price depends on the number of attractions to visit, and not on the number of days. For example, if we decide on 5 things, the pass will cost € 118 and something ends up saving. In this case we recommend:

  • Empire State Building (individual price $ 57)
  • Top of the Rock ($ 30)
  • 9/11 Museum ($ 24)
  • Ferry to the Statue of Liberty and the Immigration Museum of Ellis Island ($ 18.50)
  • MoMa ($ 25)

8. Do you travel in total backpacking plan and you don't want to spend anything on attractions? Don't worry, there are a few things to see and do for free in New York. And yes ... there is even a free tour (although you must tip at the end of the visit, of course).

9. You saw there are days when museums are freebut we recommend avoid them, especially in very tourist sites like the MoMa: it is filled so much that in the end you will not see anything. Not worth it. Here we tell you which are the best museums in New York.

10. Do not stay only in ManhattanNew York is made up of many different neighborhoods, such as Brooklyn or Queens, which would be a crime not to visit. But obviously Manhattan has to be kicked well. Here is a guide to the main Manhattan areas.

12. A good way to get to know as much of New York as possible in the shortest time is take a tour of contrasts. We, after looking carefully at all the options, have decided to always carry a Bnext card each one, which we combine with another N26 card each one, to extend limits and go quieter in case of failure. Both are free and will allow you to save a paste.

If you do not want to get this card, it is best to take € and change a small amount at the airport and a large part in a city exchange office (which usually offer better change).

19. Ainnns theme tips, tricky subject. Long story short: in New York, as in the rest of the United States, you have to leave tips in bars and restaurants. How does it work? Normally 15-18% of the total amount is left.
