Located on the top of a hill in the Sierra Cabrera, on the coast of the Almeria Almeria, Mojacar has earned the label of charming town. Its heart is a network of labyrinthine lanes and impossible ramps of stone, with small houses with white facades and flower pots, where cats come to reassure you to say good morning (even if it is 6 pm). In addition, its location, next to the sea, the mountain and even the desert, and one step away from one of the most natural places in Spain: Cabo de Gata, makes Mojacar claim to be a super complete destination.

Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Greeks, Muslims and Christians passed through here. A mixture of cultures that has shaped this corner of Almeria and has breathed a unique personality. It is not a coincidence that it always appears in the listings of the most beautiful villages in Spain. If you plan to visit it you are in luck, we will tell you 25 things to see and do in Mojacar (and vicinity). We know her quite well, because we have been living there nearby for a while, and believe us: if the area is cool to spend the summer, to live it is even more cool (even for a season hehe).

First of all, understand that Mojacar is divided into two zones: Mojacar Playa, where most large hotels, restaurants and beach bars and clubs are concentrated, and Mojacar Pueblo, a few kilometers inland. The best, in the upper part of the town, is essentially wandering around and letting yourself be guided by instinct ... Honestly there is no corner of Mojacar that we don't like, although if we were to recommend some unmissable points, these would be:

1. Visit the New Square and freak out with the views from the viewpoint: you will have under your feet a beautiful panoramic view of the whole area. Curiosity: many know the plain that extends in front of Mojacar as “the Valley of the Pyramids”. The pyramids are really small mountains with a pyramidal shape ... don't look for pharaohs that aren't there! And yes, of course the views of the sea are amazing.

2. One of the most beautiful places in Mojacar is the Parterre Square, surrounded by columns, which is filled with tables where locals and tourists drink canes and tapas. It is usually where we end up leveraging 😉 Curiosity: this square was once an Arab cemetery!

3. There next to it is the Church of Santa María, whose walls are full of flowers and trees. Before his entrance is the Mojaquera statue, a marble sculpture dedicated to the women of the city.

4. The Arrabal It is the old Jewish quarter, and one of the most charming areas of Mojacar. Let yourself be carried along its alleys with picturesque little houses, whirlpools and colorful flowers. It is one of our favorite corners.

5. Another thing to do in Mojacar is to cross the City Gate, a semicircular arch of stone that was built in the old city wall, back in the 16th century. Almost na.

6. This we are going to tell you is nothing you have to do, but it is a curiosity that you can tell your fellow travelers in front of a beer in a bar. Did you know that there is an urban legend that tells that Walt Disney Was he born in Mojacar? Apparently a local girl, Isabel Zamora, went to live in the United States with her son, José Guirao Zamora, and he ended up being adopted by a family from Chicago. Well yes, you guessed, according to this story, that Joseph was Walt! True or false? Who knows! What does seem somewhat discarded is that Walt Disney was cryogenized before he died ...

7. And speaking of legends, there is another one worth knowing: just down from the Plaza Nueva there is a cave, which they say was formerly inhabited by a sorcerer. At a time when Mojacar was suffering from a plague attack, the sorcerer invented a remedy against this terrible disease, but put a condition to deliver it to his neighbors: marry Maria (known as Mariquita), a beautiful young woman he was in love. The girl finally agreed to the wedding to save the town, and they started calling her Ladybug the Posá (married - posa). How does the story end? Wrong. But we are not going to spoiler ... if you want to know the end you have two options: read it here or visit Mojacar.

8. In the lower part of town is the Mora fountain, a source of Moorish origin where the Arabs handed over the city to the Catholic Monarchs. It was 1488 and since then the fountain is still working!

9. Mojacar is well known for its beaches: it has some 17 km of coastline! Some Beaches prettiest of Mojacar are the Marina de la Torre beach, wave Alarrobico beach.

10. Although if you want to enjoy the wild and beautiful coast of Almeria, we recommend you rent a car and tour the Cabo de Gata: from Mojacar you arrive in a plis plas. Here we tell you everything to see and do in Cabo de Gata.

11. Another highly recommended excursion, especially if you have enough vacation days, is to approach the Tabernas Desert, which was the location of endless movies (from Spaghetti Western to Game of Thrones!).

12. Not everything is a party in Mojacar, we saw it, but if you are looking for a party… you will find it. Some of the best nightclubs from Mojacar are the Maui Beach Club and the Mandala. If it has been a while since your early years, you may prefer the Lua or the Maraui (although the latter is in Vera Playa, about 14 km from Mojacar) quite quieter. Another good plan is to spend a fun night at the Patio 2000, where you can have a cocktail at the foot of the beach ... and if you are lucky it will play live music night. There is ambience of the good.

13. Do you want to take a souvenir? Buy a Indalo. What is it? It is the best known symbol of Almeria. It is an anthropomorphic figure with arms raised forming an arch over the head. Its origin is due to the discovery of a cave painting in a cave in the province of Almería. They say it brings good luck! If you look you will see it everywhere (cars, houses, stores ...).

14. There are some small trekkings and walks that the most active travelers will like. One of our favorites is the one that reaches the Pirulico Tower, from the end of Mojacar beach and passing through the Macenas Castle. The views are incredible. It is part of the known as the La Mena trail (If you want to cover it, it's 10 km).

15. Take some tapas in the Gastro Malabar, a place specializing in author tapas. Apparently the cook worked with Quique Dacosta and the quality of the kitchen is high. Of course, they are small tapas, so if you are good to eat you may go for a pizza on the way out. But to snack something delicious, it's great!

16. One of our favorite restaurants, with great views of the beach, is the Neptune. His specialty is the sardine spits, but everything is delicious. In autumn / winter they also have a menu of the day that for € 8 includes drinks, salad and main course. We love! Here we tell you more places and restaurants to eat in Mojacar (coming soon).

17. Visit Garrucha, a typical fishing village that is very close to Mojacar. You can shop around the promenade, do some shoppong on Calle Mayor and try the incredible tapas of the Corner of the Port (The potatoes with their secret sauce are addictive!) or those of the Boracay (very, very beautiful, on the beachfront). If the budget is not a problem for you, you can also eat the famous “red prawns”In one of the many restaurants on the seafront.

18. Pulling inwards you have Bedar, another small town that deserves a visit, especially if you like rural tourism. Quiet, green and relaxed ... if you are looking for a few hours of disconnection, it is your place.

19. Instead, to enjoy a more movidito plan, especially if you are traveling with your family or the water parks drive you crazy, you can visit Vera's water park, AquaVera, right behind where we live. It is best to buy tickets online and save a little (and also skip the line!).

20. A good date to visit Mojacar is during the festival of Moors and Christians, which commemorates, during a weekend in June, the peaceful delivery of the city to the Catholic Monarchs.

21. Another interesting party is the Candle Night (It changes every year, in July it falls on July 25), during which the whole town is lit with thousands of candles in the middle of the summer night.

22. We have not visited it yet but they spoke wonder of the Museum “Canana House”, A typical house from the 1920s, lovingly restored by its current owners. They say that, as soon as you enter through the door, it is like traveling to the past. Admission costs € 2.5.

23. The Villaricos market (Sundays), for us the best in the whole area. In Mojacar, on the same day, there is a market in the area of the Multiple Use Center, but the truth is not much. Of course, Sunday is our day to go up to Mojacar and take a lid of paella in the Habanero XD. That is a good plan!

24. New: from July 1 you can visit the Giant Pulpí Geode, one of the largest and most spectacular in the world (8 meters wide and 2 meters high!). More info here.

25. And we almost forgot something fundamental: come closer to know Almeria, especially if you are a fan of Game of Thrones (in the Alcazar scenes of the city of Dorne were shot) and if you love to eat well! Here we tell you everything you can see and do in Almería.

Sure we forget something, but it is a good start. Do you know the area? You know more things to see and do in Mojacar?
